Nature is not only what is visible to the eyeit shows the inner images of the soulthe images on the back side of the eyes Edvard Munch
To me, painting is a spiritual event. The space between painter and canvas is natural, supernatural, and spiritual. I delight in the evolution of process, and my paintings address ones inner self, connecting with outside world. My current body of work Hanging on by a Thread is an exploration of cartography as well as the ephemeral nature of the world we live in.
I often look to maps as a source of inspiration. The multiple shapes and many colors have always fascinated me. With antiquated atlas pages and the idea that the world that once was is no longer, I create freehand translations of our world into a language all anew. I enjoy the idea of the viewer seeing the world mapped out in new ways with mixed media materials. Some may see the strings that weave through the atlas paper as road. While others may view the string as an artistic expression of a line connecting one place to another.
As our global society becomes more instantly connected our lives are impacted by events that happen thousands of miles away. My maps are a visual interpretation of different parts of the world connecting and intertwining to break the invisible barriers that once separated us. The raw canvas, gouache, atlas pages, and thread help to reinforce the fact that the world we live in is transient.
